Know Thyself in Greek “γνῶθι σεαυτόν” in Roman "Nosce te ipsum"
Socrates and Plato both applied the idea of self-awareness as a guiding concept as mentors. In essence it is the impulse and action to discover one's life purpose through introspection and reflection. To understand what and who we are as individuals, is to know what our capabilities and potential are; what our true nature is.
Having a mentor opens up an individual to contemplate the possibilities and practice negotiating the complexities of the World with greater confidence and a surer sense of purpose.
Living our future lives, in synchronicity with our true nature, in a world which is rapidly changing, is a life that can be happy, ethical, dynamic and uniquely successful.
Mentoring supports the process of becoming more self-aware, for anticipating one's future life and career trajectory, for taking responsibility in thoughtful directing of one’s life, and in one's role in the evolution of the human experience. Accessing a mentor at every point of our lives enhances our world view and our place in it and offers unforeseen insight.
An examined life reveals patterns of behavior, the construction of the individual mind, the aspects of character that frame how we interact with our world and the actions we take. Deeper contemplation and reflection yields greater understanding of our subconscious programming, the powerful mental software that run our lives.
Unless we become aware of these patterns, much of our lives devolve into cycles of unconscious repetition, inhibited personal growth, unhappiness and limited personal achievement.
In the face of the challenges humanity is increasingly encountering now and in the future- in all aspects of the human experience:
(globalization; political disruption; climate change; social adaptation to the technology of all things) individual and human success will require deeper capabilities, discovery of untapped talents and a clearer vision of the tracks of the future.
The essential mind of the future is not the mind of the past. The success of one's future and humanity's future will depend on knowing thyself in the context of a very new, complex and challenging world and taking action.
The Student Compass mentors can support that life-long exercise in self-awareness and strategic planning and problem-solving with greater objectivity and meaning.
