Find purpose for your life.

The acquisition of stuff - of wealth and of power is never enough to satisfy one’s soul. The neurological “hedonic treadmill”  built into our brain chemistry,  is driven by the short-lived neuro-chemical exhilaration of dopamine blasts which a sense of  “achievement and acquisition” endows. (Facebook uses this phenomena to keep that same sort of  “rush”  going, to keep you on their platform”.)  But that dopamine rush (reward) dwindles fairly rapidly and the drive to acquire more stuff to gain that rush is reinforced. However, like all addictions the rush diminishes unless further “achievement” often in the form of material wealth, is gained.  Sadly, most people who strive for material acquisition can never truly “have enough” and so swing from highs to lows and a deepening sense of dissatisfaction and purposelessness. It is a true addiction and it simply keeps you on that treadmill forever turning, turning —with no relief and a deepening disquiet and a feeling of failure.

But finding a purpose for your life

that benefits others does give you a deeper, long-lasting feeling of satisfaction, of purpose and meaning for your life. So focus not on consumption and acquisition of stuff ( greater and greater wealth) but on the simple gifting of your talents and care for others. There then you will find meaning and purpose and the satisfaction of a life well-lived.
You will have achieved a happy life.
